Text Box: Seven Steps to a Healthy Weight
Text Box: According to the American Dietetic Association, one in three Americans is overweight. Many will try the newest fad diets, but most will gain back the weight. Successful weight loss means making the change to a healthy lifestyle. Here are the 7 steps ADA recommends.

Make health, not how you look, your goal. Choose a healthy weight that is realistic.
Forget the word “diet”. Eating on a diet lasts a short time; eating for good health should last forever.
Choose a healthful eating plan. Include a variety of foods from each food group.
Portion sizes are important. One portion of meat or fish is the size of a deck of cards; 1 cup of fresh fruits or vegetables is the size of a baseball; 1 ounce of cheese is about 1 cubic inch; ½ cup of cooked vegetables is about the size of three ice cubes.
High fat foods are packed with calories. Make low-fat choices, whenever possible.
Physical activity will help you lose weight and keep it off. Start activities slowly and only as recommended by your physician.
Slow and steady weight loss is more successful than a drastically fast loss. A good weight loss is one pound a week.

You may contact the Consumer Nutrition Hot Line at 1-800-366-1655 for food and nutrition information, and to find a registered dietitian in your area.
Text Box: In Memoriam

We are saddened to learn that one of our original Board members, Bob Purinton of Topsham died in February.  He always had a cheery smile and kind words for everyone.  He and his wife Estelle regularly attended our annual conferences.  Our condolences go out to his family. We will miss him.
